My Sabbatical ... Sort of

First I want to say thank you to all of you who sent me emails to reach out and make sure that both Dan and I are okay.  I am very, very sorry that I didn’t have the time to respond yet.  I hope to find time in the future to respond to all of you who were so kind to spend your time to check on us.  Your thoughtful messages meant a lot to me.

Needless to say my life has been out of control busy for the last few months.  It seems like every day something else gets added to my already bulging to-do list.  *sigh*  Since you know I don’t like to focus on what is wrong I am going to skim over the bad things and focus instead on the positive.

We have had the most wonderful weather this spring.  There have been quite a few days in the upper 80s already this year which is unbelievable.  The sailboat is officially “unwinterized” and she has already been out a few times which were fantastic!

Our first trip of the season was with our new friend Lauren.  You remember Lauren we met her are Johns Hopkins during our unplanned visit this January. Lauren is quickly becoming an unofficial member of the family.  We have seen her on average once a week since we met in January.  It is wonderful to have a local health conscious friend who I can share healthy recipes, books, videos and articles with and hear her thoughts.   Lauren has also been kind enough to offer to be a recipe taste tester for me.  By the way, the new curried almond salad with cashew mayo recipe (no oil of course) was very well received.  Now I need to measure the ingredients since the concept worked.  This will be making regular appearances on the boat this summer, it is that good.

Also on the very positive news front  “my duck” (the one who eats Cheerios and catches them in the air) had babies.  As Dan said I am proud “grandmother”  LOL.  My duck brought her little ones over to meet me the day they were born.  I couldn’t be more thrilled if I were an actual grandmother.  ;-)  Aren’t they just the cutest little things?  They are the sweetest little chirpy fluff balls.  J  Since I am sure some of you are curious the little ones are already eating Cheerios.  I need to do some research and figure out what I should be feeding my ducks so that they are as healthy as possible.

What has gotten in the way of writing entries for the blog?  There have been so many things that I really don’t know where to start.  First there was a series of computer problems that resulted in three dead laptops in the span of a few days.  Dan was able to reformat one of them and resurrect it but the other two are permanently gone.  We bought another ultrabook and are now back to two laptops thank goodness.  After the laptop debacle of 2012 I don’t go anywhere near Dan’s desktop in his home office. All I need is to crash that too. I used to joke that I have the black thumb of death with plants but now I think the same thing is true with computers.  ;-)

Additionally I have been much busier than I anticipated with school (both the Immersion program at IIN and the Robbins-Madanes program).  Also my health coaching business is taking off and that too is taking up a lot more time than I expected.  However I will say that I am still thrilled each time someone has an “ah –ha moment”.  I can honestly say that I will never get tired of helping people reverse unhealthy trends and get on a better path.

Part of ramping up the business meant that I needed to stop fiddling around and square away my second website which I have been working on “in my spare time”, what little of that there has been over the last few months.  I am reasonably happy with my new site.  However I would love to get a little more feedback before I open it up to everyone.  If you have time to look at the site and give me feedback please let me know by sending an email to veganepicurean@gmail.com with “new site review” in the header and I will send you link.  Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider whether you have time to help me out or not.

As you can tell I went from a woman of leisure to running flat out, rather zero to sixty in a lot of respects. I knew that I would be busy but never anticipated that I would be this busy.  However I am not complaining things are working out well so it’s all good.  There is a lot more going on but I have to save some of it for future posts so I don’t run out of things to write about.  ;-)

What have you been up to this spring? Is there anything fun going on in your life? Any new tips or tricks to staying healthy that you would like to share with others?  As I am very fond of saying we are stronger together than we are alone.

Happy thoughts:

Since it has been a while since I have written my happy thoughts I will need to get back into the habit of doing this.  J

  • Two weeks ago I got to spend a weekday with my husband when he had a trip to Richmond for work. I rode along to keep him company and we talked the 3 hours down and back which made us both happy. We had lunch at our favorite veg restaurant and I got more recipe ideas. I will tell you more about this later.
  •  I bought a new Vitamix for home and now I have my old Vitamix on the boat.  *happy dance*  I love having a Vitamix on the boat.  Now we can have green smoothies anytime and anywhere.  Could life get any better?  Well maybe it could get better.  One of the guys (Eric, who you will be hearing more about in upcoming posts) at the marina saw my Vitamix in action and he bought one too.  I am spreading the Vitamix love everywhere I go.  I really should be on their payroll.  LOL
  •  Recently I have been testing homemade fabric softeners because I dislike the idea of using the chemical stuff with its carcinogens and that has been going really well.  This is something else that I need to share with you in an upcoming post.  If you don’t see this in a few weeks and are interesting be sure to remind me to tell you about it.
  •  I have been reading a lot of books on Buddhism in my free time and I must say the more I learn the more it draws me in.  If any of you have any book suggestions let me know I would love to know what you would recommend. I will tell you about the specific books I have been enjoying in a future post.
  • Dan and I went to a fun little Italian movie at The Charles last week called " The Salt of Life” that was cute.  It was shot in Rome and made us both miss Italy since we adore Rome.  We may need to take a little trip sometime this year to satisfy our craving for living on Italian time.  Any of you who have been fortunate enough to go to Italy know exactly what I mean.
  • As crazy as this will sound I have finally come to terms with the fact that I am going to be 50 years old later this week.  Wow, I can’t believe that I said that out loud LOL.  I now realize that since I don’t look my age I really need to wear 50 proudly.  ;-)  This has really been huge for me since I have been dreading turning 50 for the last 3 years. Yes I actually started worrying about it when I was 47.  No vanity here…… LOL
  •  I am also very thankful for every day that I get to spend with my wonderful husband. We both appreciate every moment we have.  One thing that cancer has taught me is that life is short so enjoy it now since none of us know how long we have.  Buddhism reminds me that the only moment any of us has is now and to live fully in this moment.

Signing out:

I have a client to coach later today and then I need to do fun things like finish doing laundry and cleaning the kitchen since I actually cooked today.  I hope you are having a wonderful day.  It is my plan to get back to daily posting though my posts will probably be shorter than they have in the past.  In a few weeks I will be sharing the second site with all of you and that is where I will be writing more about health with this blog reserved for my recipes and daily musings.

Talk with you all again soon which I hope means tomorrow.  J

31 Days to Better Health - Day 24

Happy Tuesday, I hope the week is still going well for you.  We managed to get through Monday without any drama or crisis which was extremely nice.  I could use a little dullness in my life for a while so that I can relax and recharge.  In fact I used my down time to get in a little meditation time. It was a very relaxing way to spend a cold, dreary and often rainy Monday.

(Luca looking innocent)

However Tuesday morning was not smooth sailing at my house. Sometimes I think if it weren’t for my cats I would have nothing to do.  Luca was in the kitchen with me this morning when I was making Dan’s smoothie. I headed to the freezer to stash his smoothies and just as walked by she swished her tail. I didn’t want to step on her and lost my balance dropping one the glasses of chocolate smoothie which smashed on the floor. She stood there looking at me indigently like “why did you do that”.  Then Luca decided that she wanted to leave the kitchen and go through the broken glass and chocolate.  *ugh*  I got the cat out of the kitchen without getting any chocolate on her and had to close all three cats in a room while I cleaned up the mess.  Poor Dan only got half his normal breakfast this morning and now my slippers are covered in chocolate.  By the time Dan had finished getting ready for work and had come downstairs for breakfast all evidence of the chaos had been removed.

(Nicco....under that white fuzz is a little brat, but we love him)

After I got his lunch packed I decided that a nice bath was in order to chill out.  I had planned on relaxing but Binky jumped up on the edge of the tub and slipped into the bath with me.  His back feet got wet as did the end of his tail. When I called for Dan Binky dripping wet tail and all ran out of the bathroom and met Dan in the hallway. Dan had to corner him and dry him off with one of my towels.  Yes this is what life is like at my house in the morning.  Who said life is calm and peaceful when you don’t have children in house?  Fortunately Masi was sound asleep in our bed because we had turned on the electric blanket for him. At least one of our cats wasn’t a problem this morning.  ;-)  It definitely pays to have a sense of humor at our house.

Now that you have a vivid picture of morning at my house let’s get back to the work of improving our health. For those of you who are just joining us here is the recap of what we have accomplished so far to remind us all of how much we have covered during the first 22 days of January:

Day 22 – Give Up the Diet Mentality
Day 23 – The Meaning and/or Purpose of Food

What did you think of yesterday’s post about the meaning and/or purpose of food?  Did you learn anything about yourself through the exercises?  If you don’t like how you view food and want to change it but don’t know how let me know either by posting a comment on the prior post or by sending me an email.  I changed how I view food and I know you can too.  Once you begin to view food as fuel everything else is easy.  J

Trigger Foods/Situations/People:

This idea was inspired by Christy’s comment about not being able to stop eating chocolate.  I remembered her comment yesterday when I was writing about my addiction to Italian comfort foods (bread, pasta and pizza).  However for some people it goes beyond specific foods and triggers also include particular situations and sometimes people.  I think most us have foods that we find difficult to control ourselves around.  Do you know what those foods are for you?  Do you know if you also have situations and people who are problematic for you?  Do you have strategies to handle these foods, situations and people?  That is what we are going to talk about today.

I am going to assume that you don’t know what foods you crave because I didn’t always know what those foods were for me. However there are some easy ways to figure it out but you will need to use the food journal that we set up yesterday.  Look at your journal and see if there were any foods that you ate when you weren’t hungry. If there were foods that you ate even though you had a hunger level of 0 it is a good bet those are your trigger foods.  If there were no foods that you ate yesterday when your hunger level was 0 either this isn’t an issue for you, or it shows up differently.  Were there any foods that you over ate while you were keeping the journals. These would have showed up as items you ate that resulted in your being full on the scale of 2 or 3.  Reaching the 2 scale may mean that you need to eat more consciously and slowly or it could be the result of consuming trigger foods.  If you reached a level 3 on the fullness scale I would say you have found your trigger foods.

The next question is do you have a problem one food or more than one?  My trigger foods all involve high carb items that are savory in nature.  I can easily pass up cookies or desserts but fresh baked bread is a killer for me.  I also have difficulty with pasta, pizza, potatoes, anything starchy as you can see.

Now that we have identified the foods that trigger us to over eat what do we do about it?  For me the answer was very simple I take the easy way out and keep those items out of my house.  However I also know that I can have them in moderation when we are out and that is enough to satisfy me.  The problem comes when Dan wants pizza or bread.  Since I know that I have nearly zero self control around these things, but I don’t want him to be deprived due to my issue I make certain that he is home when I make them. I know myself well enough that I wouldn’t even consider preparing these during the week when he was at work.  Fortunately Dan and I talk about everything so he knows my weaknesses and understands that I need his help.  Can you do something similar with your trigger foods?  Maybe your family can have them when they go out, or they can be a special weekend meals instead.

I alluded to the situation that I have difficulty with above. I am much more likely to eat something that isn’t in my best interest when I am alone.  I think this is because being around people holds me accountable to myself.  My husband knows me as well and sometimes better than I know myself.  We talk about everything and he is always there to give me a gentle nudge when I need it.  Having a built in support system works very well for me.  What about you, do you know what types of situations are problematic for you?  I have talked to many people who have the same issue that I do eating things they shouldn’t when they are alone. However I have also heard from people who have difficult in the opposite situation. They are extremely disciplined when they are alone but you put them in a group and they feel like they need to fit in.  Other people have problems when they are eating where there is a buffet; parties are a common danger spot for people.  I have also talked to a few people who have difficulties staying on track when they go out to a bar. Apparently having alcohol reduces their discipline.  As varied as these situations all they all have solutions. The important thing is to identify what your specific issue is so that you can do something about it.

For example if being alone is a problem then keeping the trigger foods out of your house works well.  If you know that you have difficulty sticking to your plan when you go out due to peer pressure then you need develop phrases and strategies that you can use.  You could eat before you go so that you can honestly say you aren’t that hungry and salad is enough. Alternately you could explain that you are watching your weight (or are concerned about your cholesterol) and you need to stick with a salad.  In this situation all that is required is that you have thought about how you will handle things so you are prepared.  If you have difficulty with buffets at a party I have a few suggestions.  You can do what I do and scan the buffet before picking up a plate.  This way I know what looks healthy and what doesn’t.  Another tip that works well for me is to eat before these events so that I am not hungry when I arrive. I also like to carry a drink (usually club soda with lime) so that I don’t have a free hand. Most people are too busy doing their own thing to notice that you aren’t eating.  The last suggestion I have for buffets at parties is to go in telling yourself that you won’t get something until a certain time (near the end).  This way you have delayed eating and even if you get something that isn’t in your best interest there won’t be much of it.  If you problem is eating the wrong items when you are at a bar (or are drinking) this one is a little more tricky.  I could give you the obvious answer of don’t drink because it isn’t good for you but that probably isn’t what you want to hear.  The only thing I could think of for this was to eat before you go out. This will do two things, a full stomach will keep the alcohol from be absorbed as rapidly and that should help you make better choices. Also a full stomach will mean you have less room for unhealthy bar food.  If you have any other suggestions for this situation please share I would love to hear them.

The final area where I have heard people have difficulty with being around specific people.  I was surprised the first time I talked with someone and they told me that they make healthy choices all the time except when they are out with a specific person.  However after I heard this a few times I realized this was much more common than I expected.  The commonality in what people told me was that they had a specific friend where food was their bond. They would go out and eat unhealthy items like pizza, maybe they would go the bar and have beer and wings, or meet at Starbuck’s cappuccinos.  If you have this issue I have some suggestions.  You can find a restaurant that has both the healthy fare you want and things your friend will enjoy.  Our chef friend Ian fills this need beautifully for us.  I am sure there are places near you that can do the same.  Alternately you could get together at your home instead and that way you had complete control over the food.  What about meeting for a picnic and you both bring your own food?  My favorite idea is to get together for a non-food activity. You could meet an exercise class, a run or a walk.  What about a movie, or a concert?  There are many options here to get away from unhealthy food gatherings with this particular friend.  If they are a close friend you can confide in them that you are watching what you eat and ask them for their help.  Most people want to help and when you share something that you are struggling with usually they are more than happy to do what they can to be of assistance.

Today’s exercises are:

1.       We are going to return to the food journal that we started yesterday to identify the problem foods, situations and people.  You will need to keep track for a little while in order to identify the areas that you need to be aware of.  For some people a week may be enough time and others may need a month. After you have collected at least a week of data review your results. Does anything stand out as being a problem?  The important thing is to identify the things that are problems for you so that you can develop strategies to deal with them.  If nothing jumps out as a problem continue to keep the journal and come back to it in another week and look again.
2.       Once you have identified your problem foods, situations or people now it is time to brainstorm how you will handle these situations.  Write down as many possible solutions as you can think of.  Put these ideas into practice at each opportunity to determine which ones work best for you.

Were you able to identify the situations that are problematic for you?  I hope that you were.  Knowing what the problem is in 90% of the battle.  Remember that everyone has things that they struggle with, you are not alone. Now that you know what you need to work on the rest is easy.  J Like always if anything that I wrote is unclear or you think that it requires clarification please don’t hesitate to let me know either by commenting or sending me an email.

Progress on my goals:

1.       Newsletters – Monday I took the day off to get a few other things accomplished.

2.       Body Bugg – I continue to wear my bugg and I have gotten back into using it the way I had intended when I purchased it.  Go me!  J

3.       Date with Dan – Dan and I have been going for a walk each night after dinner. We are using this time to get away and talk as well as to add some movement and fresh air to our day.  Dan wants to get a little caught up at work but then we will be getting back to our date plan during the week.

4.        Measuring calorie dense food – I am making a little progress on this but I really need to focus on it with every veggie meal to help my body absorb the fat soluble vitamins.

5.       Working on my business – Monday I took the day off from working on the business.  The January posts are taking me many more hours to write than usual. As much as I love these posts I will be happy to see February arrive since I really need a little time back to work on other things, the business being one of them.

How are you feeling about your progress so far?  I hope you feel like you have made a few lasting changes this month.  J

Random Thoughts:

When we went for our evening walk last night we got on the topic of meditation. I told Dan how much I have been enjoying the meditation course from The Great Courses and how surprised I am that I feel somehow connected to Buddhism.  It is very strange for me since I was never interested in Asian religions in the past.  If you have read any books on Buddhism that you would recommend please share.  I would appreciate any suggestions you wish to share.

Another topic that we discussed during our walk was not sweating the small stuff.  It always surprises me how often someone will tell me about seeing one of my recipes on someone else’s site without any credit back to me.  The funny thing is that I could really care less about this.  I know that anything that I put on the web basically fair game for plagiarism. I share my recipes freely to help others to cook more healthfully with the hope that they will be able to improve their health.  Is it annoying that people will blatantly rip off my work?  Of course it is.  However in the larger scheme of life it is not significant.  If they can live with the idea that they stole there is nothing that my anger will do to them.  This is something else that I have learned from meditation.  The only thing that any of us can change is our behavior. We can give others information but in the end they are the ones that need to want to change. In the case of someone blatantly stealing they are obviously not concerned with what other people think. There is no reason to waste my time being upset.  Is there anything that upsets you that maybe you need to let go of?

Speaking of recipes I noticed this weekend that my vegan mayo has over well over 10,000 hits now.  You have no idea how much this bothers me. When I figured out how to make this I was very pleased and wanted to share it with everyone.  About 6 months later I stopped using oil and haven’t made it since.  I really wish that people weren’t going to this so often because it makes me feel like I am contributing to their unhealthiness. I considered taking it down for that reason but decided that I shouldn’t since it is a least a tiny bit better than regular mayo. I have a question for you; if I can come up with something similar without oil would you be interested?  How many of you still use mayo with oil but would like a no-oil product?  I haven’t used mayo is so long that I don’t miss it but if there is a need for a healthy product I would be happy to work on a recipe.  Just let me know what you think by commenting here or emailing.

How many of you were surprised by some of the things we used to eat?  I thought twice about writing that but realized that most people haven’t been vegan their entire life and it is part of who I am.  There are many things that I have consumed in my past that I wish I could undo.  However I choose to view those as learning experiences rather than mistakes. I hope that you are starting to understand more about the experiences that shaped who I am.  As I have told you many times before I have not been healthy all my life, or even most of my life.  I truly believe that if I can get healthy anyone can do it.

Acknowledgements:

Have you made any progress writing acknowledgements?  I hope you are working on this exercise. I find that it helps me stay positive and recognize the things that I do every day.  Here are my acknowledgements:

·         It was nice to spend a little time in the kitchen on Monday.  It felt good knowing that I had a jar of bean soup in the refrigerator for lunches.  I love having cooked beans in the house because I feel so much healthier when I eat them every day.

·         Monday was a little busy and I almost didn’t make a batch of lasagna for Dan.  However since he hardly ever asks for anything I stopped studying and got the lasagna prepped and into the oven at about 6pm.  When Dan was enjoying his lasagna I was very happy that I make it for him.  He liked it so much that he had one and half servings.  When I see him enjoying it that much I am reminded that one of the reason I like to cook is that it makes Dan happy to eat.  It is wonderful knowing that I can make healthy food that he loves enough to have an extra helping.

·         It felt wonderful to have a little time to listen to another two lessons on the meditation DVDs.  So far this is definitely my favorite DVD from The Great Courses.

Monday:

There was no exciting food on Monday, sorry to disappoint you. I had my Asian savory oatmeal for breakfast. You have seen it so many times that I didn’t bother to photograph it.  The picture above is one of my prior ones.

My lunch was what was leftover of the kale and walnut sauce.  It was still delicious even as a leftover.

Dinner was Dan’s favorite lasagna the one that I posted here.

I also made a big pot of the French market bean soup which I documented here. The version I made today did not include any seitan sausage.

Happy thoughts:

Have you gotten into the habit of writing your happy thoughts?  I find it helpful to remind myself how often things go well and that I shouldn’t take these things for granted.   As always there are so many things to be thankful for that I almost don’t know where to start. Here are my happy thoughts:

·         I get excited each time we add a new follower to the blog. Since January 1 when we started the 31 Days to Better Health series we have picked up 24 new followers in 23 days.  *woo hoo*   Thank you to all of you who take the time to read.  If you ever have any questions or suggestions please let me know.  I am happy to share any tips or tricks I have learned with you and I love it when you share your tips with me.  It is my goal that we all change our health for the better.  I want all of us to end 2012 healthier than it started.  Each of us is stronger together than we are alone.  J

·         It is 5:20pm as I am writing this and the sun is just staring to set, and it is still 54 degrees I might add.  *woo hoo*  I can remember not long ago when it was completely dark before 5pm.  I love that the days are getting longer. Come on spring, hurry up and get here I have a sailboat calling my name.

·         Tomorrow is the first teleclass for RMT which should be fun.  I am looking forward to getting started with the next round of training. Thankfully I can do training through my smart phone since the class ends just about the time we are due at a doctor appointment.  Isn’t technology wonderful?  What did we do before we had mobile technology?  Sadly I am old enough to remember life without PCs if you can imagine.  LOL

·         Our weather has been lovely today. The temperatures were back up in the mid-50s, the rain disappeared last night and all the snow from the weekend is gone.  It definitely felt and looked a lot more like spring today.  The weather people are predicting this warm spell will stick around through at least Saturday.  Nice!

·         I got a nice email from Lauren at Hopkins early this morning.  We are going to try to get together next week. We thought lunch would be nice and I want to introduce her to Ian. He will want to kill me I am sure since he claims he doesn’t do vegan.  Oh well he will get over being mad I am sure, well at least I think he will.  Wish me luck, I may need it.  You know how temperamental artistic people can be.   LOL

Signing Out:

Tuesday was another busy day for me.  I still marvel at how many things I have on my to-do list given that I don’t work “outside” the home.  How did we ever get things accomplished when I did?  *scratches head*

The emails about IIN continue to come in daily.  I certainly had no idea so many of you had even heard about the program let alone that you were interested.  If you have specific questions email at veganepicurean@gmail.com please don’t be shy I promise that I don’t mind answering any questions that you have.

I hope your week started well and that you have some nice things to look forward to this week.  At the very least take time to enjoy the little things in life.  J  Talk with you again soon!

31 Days to Better Health - Day 18

Hi guys!  Are you having a good week?  We are both thrilled to have Dan home and to be able to lounge around and relax all day.  Doesn’t Binky look comfortable sharing a chair with his father? Those two are both very good at relaxing.  ;-)  It was marvelous to have a lazy Tuesday and we have both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves doing basically nothing.  Wednesday we may get back to being a bit more productive depending on if Dan has caught up on his rest or not.  Some days you just need to kick back and relax and that was our Tuesday.

Have you thought of any topics that you would like to me write about?  Maybe you would like me to expand on one that I have written about in the past. If you have any suggestions don’t forget to let me know what they are so that I can add it to my list of upcoming topics.

Where has the month of January gone?  It seems like I just started writing this series and we are already 18 days into the month. Time has certainly flown for me this month.  Here is the recap of what we have accomplished so far to remind us all of how much we have covered during the first 17 days of January:

Day 15 - What Do You Want, Have You Asked?

Day 16 – Treating Others as You Wish to be Treated

Day 17 – Food as a Budget

What did you think of yesterday’s post?  It ended up being wordier than I expected it to be when I started writing. I hope it made sense. When I get verbose I tend to lose people sometimes, including myself LOL.  If you need me to explain anything don’t be shy just ask.

Silence Your Inner Critic:

I used to think that I was the only one who beat myself up emotionally.  It was instilled in me very young that in order to “get ahead” you had to work harder than everyone else and demand perfection of yourself. You will not be surprised to hear that nothing I did was ever quite good enough in the eyes of my parents.  Mind you most parents probably would have been thrilled to have me as a child but not my parents.  I was 6th out of 692 in my graduating class, oh the shame of that one B+ in my GPA.  I know that sounds ridiculous but yes it really happened.  I can tell you many other stories like this from my childhood but the bottom line is that I grew up with expectations that few people on the planet could live up.  While this did push me to work hard it also tore apart my self-esteem.

Not all inner critics are born out of perfectionism like mine was. Some of them come from exactly the opposite.  When children are told they are worthless and that they will never amount to anything that idea gets stuck in their brain too.  They grow up believing they will never be able to better themselves.  While my upbringing was bad this one is probably worse, although I am just guessing since it was not my experience. What I am trying to say is that we all have an inner voice that tells us things that aren’t useful.  Until we recognize what is happening we can’t change it.  Do you know what harmful internal dialogue goes on in your head?

As an adult I have a very vocal inner critic. She tells me that I am never good enough, smart enough, work hard enough, pretty enough, etc.   Needless to say my little inner critic does nothing but make me feel inadequate. How are any of us supposed to do good things and make a positive change in the world if our own internal dialogue is beating us up and making us feel bad about ourselves?

I don’t know about your life but I have enough challenges that are external that I really don’t need to add internal challenges to my list.  But how do we silence our inner critic?  This is something that I have been working on for the last few years. My toughest inner critic is the one who demands perfection. Nothing that I do is ever good enough for this “internal voice”.  However I have learned to listen to her less and it has helped me to be happier with what I accomplish and to see that I really am good enough exactly as I am in this moment. That is not to say that I am perfect because believe me I could list hundreds of things that I would like to improve about myself.  Just ask my inner critic what is wrong she can tell you in excruciating detail.  Rather being good enough in this moment is appreciating who I am now right now while still wanting to improve but knowing that it isn’t necessary for me to be worthy.  Does that make any sense to you?

What have I done to try to quiet my inner critic?  There hasn’t been one specific activity but rather a host of things that have helped me.  They are:

·         Writing daily acknowledgements

·         Daily meditation

·         Setting attainable goals and making progress on them each week

·         Daily reading from uplifting books

·         Realizing that each day I do my best and that is all that any of us can expect of ourselves

·         Doing something each day for someone else

·         Remembering the phrase:  “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t  you are usually right” – Henry Ford
You all know what daily acknowledgments look like now as I have been showing you mine for at least the last week.  All you are trying to do is to put on paper the things that you have done well during the day.  It is a very simple thing to do and easier if you jot them down all day long before you forget about them, which happens to me all the time. The important thing is to give yourself credit for the good things that you do.  When you to take time to pay attention you will see that there are many things you do that you should be appreciated for each day.

Daily meditation is huge for me. I have one of those minds which constantly have thoughts racing around.  I never thought I would be able to quiet my mind to meditate. In fact I couldn’t image how anyone could shut off their mind.  Until a few years ago I used to fall asleep with the TV playing to drown out my mind so that I could get some rest. My mind really was that noisy and distracting.  Learning to meditate has been huge for me.  I am still amazed that I am able to meditate.  For those of you that haven’t tried meditation if you are like me (constantly thinking) it can be difficult at first.  However after about a week of daily practice I could see a difference.  My early attempts at meditation were very different from what I do now. Just know that you can do this, it is just like anything it takes practice. However the benefits are enormous. I am so much calmer now and I use meditation when my inner critic gets loud.  Now I can simply tell my critic that I hear her and appreciate her input but that she isn’t the final authority and that is enough to quiet my mind.  Crazy right?  I hope that you try meditation; it has been a much more powerful tool than I ever expected it to be and even my hubby is getting on board with it.  J

Setting attainable goals is how I move forward in life.  I have always been a list maker and work better and I feel better when I know what I want to accomplish. Many years ago when I was in graduate school I took a few doctoral courses in organizational psychology.  Yes I have always been a sort of nerd. One of my favorites was a class on goal setting. The concepts that I learned stuck with and I still use them today.  I find that setting goals and then working on them consistently helps me to feel good about what I am doing. The key is setting attainable goals. Don’t set yourself up for failure with goals that no one can achieve (like perfectionism) because the unattainable goals will give your inner critic something to beat you up with.  It also helps to check in with yourself at least once a week to see the progress you have made and where you need to focus your effort in the coming week.

Daily reading from uplifting books is something that is a fairly new tool in my tool box.  Years ago a good of friend of mine recommended “The Power of Now” which was recommended to him by his therapist who was helping him get over his divorce. He told it was the most useful book he ever read and recommended that I get a copy.  I can still remember the first time I tried to read the book.  All I could think was “You want me to stop thinking, is that even possible?”  Fast forward about 10 years and now I have given away more copies of that book than I can count.  I probably had to read it three times before I started to actually understand it.  However now I think I live the philosophy in that book at least 50% of the time which is huge considering I started at 0%.

There are many other books I would recommend like “The21-day Consciousness Cleanse” by Debbie Ford and “The Book of Awakening” by Mark Nepo.  Look up any of those books on Amazon and you will see many others like them.  Each morning (unless trips to the hospital get in my way) I start my day reading from one or more of these books.  I do this for a number of reasons but the primary one is that it helps me to start my day in a positive frame of mind.  After I finished reading I sit down and make some notes in my journal of what I want to keep in mind or work on that day.  Do you have any favorite uplifting books?  If so please let us all know what they are, I am sure I am not the one who would like to know what everyone’s favorites are.  J

Realizing that each day I do my best and that is all that any of us can expect of ourselves is very important for me because my inner critic is a perfectionist.  For years when I would make a mistake I would internally berate myself which I learned from my parents. My father still does the same thing when he makes a mistake.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree apparently.  ;-)  However I am starting to actually believe that perfect isn’t possible and to be pleased with my efforts no matter what the results.  However I also realize that being perfect is a deeply ingrained belief and that I will probably have to work on this for the rest of my life.  For now I am reasonably content knowing that I try to do my best every day, and even when things don’t go my way those missteps will be learning experiences if I am open to the lesson they bring.

Doing something each day for someone else is something that makes me feel good about who and I am why I am here.  Even when Dan was in the hospital I found ways to do nice things for others.  I kept up with the blog, which I consider a good thing for others.  I shared recipes and food with Lauren.  We both talked about nutrition with Louie and Samantha.  I brought a biochem book in for Joe the dietitian.  Last but not least I was talking to Ray in environmental services and found out that he wants to get into patient accounting so I gave him a few suggestions and will be trying to locate some of my old hospital friends in the area to see if I can help him get an interview.   However doing things for others can be as simple as saying good morning with a smile or complimenting someone on their outfit or hair.  In my mind the important thing is to think of others.  The world is much brighter and happier place when you connect with people and this helps to silence my inner critic and may do the same for you.

Remembering the phrase:  Whether you think you can or you think you can’t you are usually right” by Henry Ford always gets me focused on what I need to be thinking. What this means is when you convince yourself that you can’t do something (like give up meat or cheese then it isn’t going to happen).   However when you tell yourself that you can make serious dietary change then you can and you will, it is all a matter of mindset.  It sounds like the law of attraction or a self fulfilling prophecy if you prefer?

Have you ever wanted something desperately but couldn’t make it happen? For me that something was losing weight.  I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get back to my happy college weight. However I also used to tell myself that I was destined to carry the extra weight, it was genetic since both my parents were heavy. Gee, I wonder why I had trouble. ;-)  If on one hand you want something but in the other hand you are telling yourself it won’t happen what do you expect will be your outcome?  In my experience when you think it won’t happen it doesn’t.  However when I changed my goal to becoming as healthy as I could at my age and told myself that I could do it……it started to happened.  The only thing that actually changed was my mindset.  Once I believed that it was possible and looked for every possible action I could take to reach my goal suddenly things were moving in the right direction. I will talk about mindset again in future posts (probably many more times) because I believe this is a critical component in terms of getting emotionally and physically healthy.

Does the inner critic serve any positive function in our lives?  I have struggled with this question and have come to the conclusion that in my life the only use my inner critic had was to push me to succeed but I think I could have done that without my inner critic.  I am doing my best to quiet my little inner critic, the one who demands perfection, and I am much happier when this voice isn’t talking to me.

Today’s exercises are:

1.       Pay attention to your thoughts and listen for your inner critic.  Trust me the critic is there but you hear it so often that I bet you don’t recognize it.  When something tells you can’t do something, you shouldn’t have done something try to move that thought out of your mind. This is much easier to do once you start practicing meditation.

2.       For each self defeating thought write a positive version of it. Here are few examples to give you the idea of what I mean.

a.       I don’t have the willpower to lose weight. Turn that into …. I have succeeded with many other things in my life and I can do this too.

b.      I really want to have pizza for lunch. That could easily become …. I would like to have pizza for lunch but I know the salad is better for me. Today I will have the salad and I can have the pizza some other time.
c.       I have a lot of stress in my life I don’t want to be nice to people today.  This becomes …. Everyone has stress in their life and I am no exception but stress is no excuse to be unkind.  It is just as easy to be nice as it is to be jerk so I will choose to be nice.

3.       Find a phrase that resonates with you and use it to bring yourself back to a better frame of mind.  I like the Henry Ford quote but there are many others out there to choose from. Simply type “inspirational quote” into Google and see what you can find.  If you get a good one please share with the rest of us.  We could all use more inspiration.

4.       Do a little research on Amazon to see what uplifting books you can find. Put any of the three I mentioned into Amazon and see what other suggestions pop up.  If you don’t want to commit to purchasing the book see if your library has it.  I am an extensive user of our library system and particularly like the online search, hold and renewal functions.  If you get a book that you are excited about please let the rest of us know.

5.       Do one nice thing for someone else today.  I find that I get more joy from helping strangers probably because they don’t expect it.  I also think this helps the world seem like a better place. I think of it as paying it forward. However if you are would rather do nice things for your family and friends that is how I started too.  J
I hope this post has helped you to think about how your mindset and your thoughts have an impact on everything that happens in your life. This is something that I think makes all the difference between being interested and committed, and success or failure. Willpower is great but that will only get you so far if you don’t have your mind in the right place.

What did you think about this post? Did it make you think? Is it something that you are interesting is reading more about?  Please let me know.  If you don’t tell me I have no idea which topics are resonating with you and which ones are falling flat.  Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with me.  J

Progress on my goals:

1.       Newsletters – Tuesday was a productive day for me.  *woo hoo* I got in over an hour on my newsletter project.  Love that!

2.       Body Bugg – I remembered to wear my bugg on Tuesday but I wasn’t very active so it didn’t have any information that I wanted to see. However information is power since we can’t change what we don’t know. I need to have both the positive and negative feedback.

3.       Date with Dan I wouldn’t call it a date but we spent a lot of time together on Tuesday talking and enjoying each other’s company.  It is very nice to have my hubby home.

4.        Measuring calorie dense food – I didn’t measure the pine nuts that I put on my dinner but I already know my fat consumption was probably little low yesterday.  I need to get back to measuring to make certain that I get enough fat.

5.       Working on my business – I spent an hour on a webinar Tuesday night (before we went to Wegman’s) getting ideas of what other people are doing. Additionally I did some work on my business plan too.  Overall it was a good day.
It has been a week since we added a goal to the list of items to work on.  Since I don’t have the newsletter project finished yet I am not going to add another goal.  However if you are happy with the progress you have made on your goals please add another one from the list we created two weeks ago.   I hope you are making good progress on your goals and that you are happy with what you have accomplished so far this month.

Acknowledgements:

Have you made any progress writing acknowledgements?  I hope are working on this exercise. I find that it helps me stay positive and recognize the things that I do every day.  Here are my acknowledgements for Tuesday:

·         I let Dan sleep in Tuesday morning because I knew how much he needed the rest. I tip toed out the bedroom and was quickly working in the family room until he woke up on his own.  This worked for two reasons: Dan got more sleep and I got some work done. It was definitely a win-win.  Love those!

·         Dan had a big beautiful bowl of super healthy oatmeal for breakfast.  With the dried cherries and goji berries and hempseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds I don’t think you could have made this oatmeal much healthier.  Not to mention he really enjoyed it while made me happy.

·         I was also pleased with my savory oatmeal with wilted kale in it.  It feels good to start the day with highly nutritious fuel.  I still can’t believe I ever ate Danish or muffins but I know I did.  No wonder I used to feel like crap all the time.  I am just thankful that I finally figured it out, better late than never.

·         We made a quick run to Wegman’s in the evening. I did some shopping while Dan walked around the store to get a little movement in.  I didn’t push him to go the gym yesterday since I thought rest and relaxation was more important. However I was glad he decided to get some movement on his own while I was shopping.

·         I picked up a few instant (just add hot water) soups by Dr. McDougall for Dan to keep in his office just in case he needed some food. They were fairly low in sodium (360mg) and had reasonable ingredients. I wouldn’t make them an everyday part of our life but as a backup I think they are fine nutritionally. Once Dan has tried them I will let you know what he thinks.

·         Dinner included not one beans (for fiber) but mushrooms (for immunity).  It was nice to get some mushrooms back into us since neither of us had any for about week. I was definitely missing my ‘shrooms.  Isn’t it wonderful when you enjoy the taste of something that is good for you?
Random Observations:

I am not going to say they are definitely related but now that Dan is home and getting some good rest his fever is practically non-existent and he is feeling tons better.  As Dr. Cat said in her comment yesterday, isn’t it ironic that it is hard to sleep in hospitals?  Did you know that our bodies do a lot of their repair at night while we are resting?  During the day when we are running around or are eating and/or digesting our bodies are too busy to do a lot of repair work. However at night they “have more time” to get things like repair accomplished. This is not to say we do no repair during our waking hours because we, but we do more when we sleep. This is one of the reasons it is important to get adequate sleep.

If you have trouble getting or staying asleep I have a few ideas for you since I sometimes have difficulty with sleep too. Here are things you can try:

·         Stop drinking liquids and eating 3 hours before bed. This way you won’t get up in the middle of the night and you won’t be bloated when you get into bed or digesting all night.  If three hours is tough based on your schedule at least stop the drinking that soon.

·         If you do have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom don’t turn on any bright lights which may make it hard for you to get back to sleep.  We have nightlights that illuminate the way to the bathroom in our house.  I have read that red bulbs are the best to use in nightlights as they are less jarring. However I haven’t tried it and very low wattage white lights seem to work fine for me.

·         Don’t watch the news just before bed, this isn’t calming. Try listening to something soothing instead like quiet music.

·         Start to dim the lights at least 30 minutes before you want to go to bed, this will help you body to “prepare” for sleep.

·         If you have to sleep during the day get room darkening shades or an eye mask to block out the light.  This will also help your body make melatonin.

·         Try meditation before bed to help you calm down and relax. This even helped Dan fall asleep in the hospital so we think it is a very powerful tip.  Too bad it didn’t keep the staff out of his room so he could stay asleep.  ;-)

·         Keep your bedroom a little on the cool side; this will help you to stay asleep.

·         I find that I sleep more peacefully if I have worked on my to-do for the next day an hour or so before bed.  It is though my mind knows that I won’t forget anything tomorrow. I am not sure this will work for you too if you find yourself waking up thinking of what you need to do (like I used to) give it try.
I hope these ideas of getting and staying asleep work for you.  Rest is very important to be in good health. I spent 20+ years being chronically sleep deprived and I feel so much better now that I get good rest.

Tuesday:

Oatmeal for Dan which included: dried cherries, dried goji berries, cinnamon, powdered ginger, nutmeg, a little stevia and was topped with raw pumpkin seeds, raw sunflower seeds and hemp seeds.  I snapped this before I added a little non-dairy milk (vanilla soy in this case).  My oatmeal is definitely more interesting than what my sweetie was getting at the hospital.

I decided to have savory oatmeal for my breakfast which included: Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, crushed red pepper flakes, black pepper, chickpeas and shredded kale.  This would also be good with sun-dried tomatoes and/or nutritional yeast but I was in a hurry and didn’t think of them until I had started eating.

We were both being so lazy during the day that neither of us thought about lunch until it was nearly dinner time. I made a quick meal with a few things that I had on hand which was quinoa topped with tomato mushroom sauce. The sauce included: diced tomato, sliced mushrooms, onions, garlic, Italian seasoning, fennel, crushed red peppers, black pepper, a splash of vegan Worcestershire, cooked garbanzos and I added sliced broccoli the last two minutes before serving. I finished the dish with pine nuts.  When I made something with red sauce I try to add broccoli as often as possible since the sulforaphane in the broccoli and the lycopene in the tomatoes seem to both absorb better when eaten together.

Both Dan and I like to shop at Wegman’s but it can be mob scene during the day. However if you go early in the morning (before 8am or late at night after 8pm) the store isn’t too crowded.  Since we wanted to pick up probiotics because Dan was on antibiotics at the hospital we head out for a late grocery store run. If you want a reminder about why we were buying the probiotics please reread this post. Our trip to Wegman’s for Culturelle also resulted in:  7 pounds of dried beans (you can never have too many you know), magazines, spinach (fresh and frozen), broccoli sprouts, oranges, Brazil nuts, raw cashews, cilantro, ….. you get the idea.  There is just something about being in a grocery store which means I need to buy.  I guess I am a bit of a food hoarder.  ;-)  We went to the store for Culturelle and raw cashews and came out with two grocery bags full.  However in my own defense I haven’t done much grocery shopping except for kale for smoothies in over a week, so we did need the fresh stuff. The dried beans we didn’t actually “need” but those are good to have in the pantry.

Happy thoughts:

Have you gotten into the habit of writing your happy thoughts?  I find it helpful to remind myself how often things go well and that I shouldn’t take these things for granted.  Here are my happy thoughts:

·         Dan must have really needed his sleep since he never gets more than 8 hours of it at one time.  My husband is one of those people who can do fine on 5 hours of sleep (unlike me). When he sleeps 11 hours on Monday and 10 hours on Tuesday I know he is exhausted. I was very happy that he is catching up on his rest.

·         We had a lovely lazy day at home on Tuesday. Dan was relaxing with cats to keep him company most of the day while I did some work.  He was enjoying his down time so much that I didn’t have the heart to drag him out to the gym.  I think he needs the rest more right now more than he needs exercise.

·         It is nice to have “food” in the house.  I am glad we got out of the house long enough to stop at Wegman’s.  We seriously needed some food around here.  I can’t wait to myself a big salad later today.  It has been days since I had salad and I a seriously craving it.  Who said that?  LOL

·         I signed up for another online course last night. This one is only 300 hours and is self paced which is nice.  Dan thought it was a good idea and pushed me to do it.  He is my biggest supporter in case you hadn’t noticed.   ;-)  It is so nice of my husband to encourage me to continue learning.  Initially I wasn’t certain how this “old brain” would do going back to school but so far age has not been a problem.  I mention this for the others out there in my age range who are considering going back to school.  I say go for it!  Follow your passion and purpose, I am and so far I am glad that have.

·         Our fur children have been very happy to have mommy and daddy home the last two days.  As I am typing this Luca is sleeping on daddy’s lap and Binky (Nicco) is cuddling with mommy and making sure that I am doing a good job on this post. You know that I can’t do it without him right?
Signing Out:

It is nice to have things returning to normal around here. Dan is still catching up on his sleep but he is definitely feeling much better being home.  I think it will be a few more days before he feels like he is completely back but he has made a ton of progress and that is wonderful to see.

The Wednesday fever update….still normal.  How weird is this that once he got out of the hospital and got one good night of sleep the mystery fever disappeared. Dan talked to the attending doc last night who joked that he must be allergic to hospitals.  I don’t know but it is odd that is all I can say.  However I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth I am just happy the fever is gone.

Last night I listened to another interesting webinar and came away with more topics to ponder.  I really do never get tired of learning. I suppose I would be fine being a lifelong college student. In retrospect I should have gone on to get my PhD so that I could have spent my entire life learning. But had I done that when I was in my 20s my PhD would have been in finance and I doubt that I would have enjoyed it as much as I expected to in college.

How was your Wednesday?  Did you do anything fun?  The week is halfway over now.  *woo hoo*  Are you starting to think about the weekend?  We haven’t made any plans for this weekend yet but we really should. I need to call Walid and/or Jackie and reschedule the dinner we had to cancel because we were at Hopkins.

Enjoy your evening and try to have some fun or at least relax. I will talk with again tomorrow.
