I have been really busy this week and I am not sure why, LOL. Of course we are still eating healthy. You didn’t think that I let that slide did you? No matter how busy I am we still NEED our healthy food and exercise.
Breakfast:
Breakfast for Dan was another green smoothie and contained the usual suspects: kale, frozen bananas, walnuts, wheat germ, freshly ground flaxseeds, cinnamon, powdered ginger, stevia and water. It makes me so happy that my hubby has embraced our new healthy lifestyle. I am thankful that my husband goes along with what I want to do in terms of nutrition.
After I exercised I made myself another grapefruit and kale juice like yesterday. That juice tastes great and is good for you. At the moment it is my favorite breakfast. Being fickle I will change my mind again but right now I can’t get enough of it.
Lunch:
Needless to say you will not be surprised to find out that I had my usual orange and two Brazil nuts, LOL. I need to make certain that I get my selenium. ;-) Later in the day I also grabbed myself a banana with homemade reduced fat peanut butter, two prunes, an apple and walnuts which I did not photograph. I seemed to be in a fruit and nut mode mid-day. What is up with that I wonder?
Dinner:
Since I had not planned dinner (nothing new there right?) we had an enormous salad for our evening meal. This one contained baby spinach, pinto beans, salsa, cucumber, red cabbage, cabbage, carrot, cilantro, avocado and chia seeds. This doesn’t look like a big salad but actually it was huge, in a serving bowl in fact. I don’t think it is really possible to have too much salad in your life. ;-)
Happy Thoughts:
While I had a busy day I also had a good one. Here are my happy thoughts:
• Two days in a row I had chance to talk with other bloggers on the phone. I am grateful for the good friends that I have made in the blogging world. It is wonderful to have friends that are healthy vegans. You ladies keep me inspired and focused on making good choices every day.
• I spent some time today cleaning and organizing. Two tasks that are not my favorite but is always good to make progress on my to-do list. I am most thankful that I have a few items crossed off my list. LOL
• Today I started listening to “The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics” on CD. So far it is cute, funny and informative. I like to listen to audio books while I do other things like cook or clean. I get the books from the library and find them to be a nice change to playing music in the background.
• The sun was out today and our temperatures reached the mid 60s. It is great knowing the winter is mostly behind us now. Woo hoo!
• Dan and I are planning to attend the DC screening of “Pig Business” on March 9. Dr. Greger is going to be taking part in the panel discussion after the film and I am looking forward to that. It is so sweet of Dan to take a half day off to go with me. He knows I am not fond of driving particularly in DC.
Signing out:
Time for us to wind down for the day in order to be awake at 5am. I hope you had a great Wednesday. We are over half way to the weekend. Woo hoo! Talk to you again tomorrow.
Your salads always look amazing. I can't really tell you how many of your recipes I have bookmarked!
ReplyDeleteThank you for continuing your quest for health and providing so much information and ideas to people like me!
Dr Micheal Gregor is a GREAT speaker. You will be entertained and learn a lot. Wish he'd come to Seattle sometime.
ReplyDeleteSgcorrie,
ReplyDeleteThanks, glad I can help. If you ever have any questions please ask any time.
Ali
Bitt,
ReplyDeleteI have all Dr. Greger's nutrition DVDs. He is definitely a bit of character, but in a good way. I missed him when we spoke to our local "earthsave" chapter this summer. Can't wait to hear him speak live.

What a tempting salad! I really need to try chia seeds. I've been meaning to for a long time. I just started working with a personal trainer 3x a week and I suspect this little powerhouse seed would be a real benefit to me right now especially!
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteChia seeds have an "odd" texture when they are soaked that reminds me of the seeds in the tomatoes with their gel exterior. I prefer them on my salad. ;-)
Yay for starting to work with a personal trainer 3 times a week. Good for you! I am doing the happy dance for you.
hugs,
Ali
The big salad looks wonderful - I agree, when you vary the veggies, you can't really have too much salad!
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy the movie. Those piggies are so cute, and I get upset seeing these commercials put out by the Ohio Pork Farmers lately. I would really hesitate to go to a public screening, but I am glad these kinds of issues are getting attention.
Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI am hoping the film isn't too cringe worthy. However I have gotten good at closing my eyes. Like you I think it is important for these issues to get press. I will definitely let you know how the event goes. *fingers crossed*
If I gave up salad I am not sure what I would eat, LOL. Salad plays a huge part in my diet. ;-)

Hi Ali
ReplyDeleteKnowing that you are a big green tea fan, I have a question for you. The other day I was in a health food store and saw green tea powder. Do you know what this is? It says something about mixing it in with milk for a green tea latte. I'm wondering about just adding a spoonful to my green smoothies. Have you seen/used the stuff and if so, do you know if it is as good for you as green tea made from green tea leaves?
Tomato Jam,
ReplyDeleteI would guess that the green tea powder is matcha and yes it is very healthy on its own more so than leaf green tea in fact. But I wouldn't add milk to it if you are drinking it for health. The protein in milk binds to the phenolic compounds making them much less well absorbed. You can add it to your smoothies if you don't use milk (dairy or non-dairy). Also if you put greens in your smoothie you should remember that polyphenols in tea bind with nonhemme iron inhibiting its intestinal absorption. I hope that helped.
Ali
Thanks Ali. I really appreciate that you don't seem to mind answering my questions. I've noticed how you comment on everyone's comments, and it's really nice.
ReplyDeleteDo you know if green tea would be okay with nut milk? My kids like to drink milky tea, and I'd like to change them over to green tea, but I have no hope of getting them to drink it without milk.
Tomato Jam,
ReplyDeleteI try to keep up with all the comments but sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming since people are still commenting on old posts. But yes I do try to respond. ;-)
Regarding tea and milk, I have only seen information about dairy milk and soy milk but nut milk also contains protein so it may bind with the polyphenols. However it also might not. Either way I think switching the little ones to green tea makes sense. It certainly won't hurt them. Also when I first switched my hubby I started with half black and half green tea in his iced tea, and that was enough to ease him in. That might work for you in the summer.
Good luck!
Ali
