Not the post I had planned to write
Tonight I should be writing about our dinner of small plates complete with the red wine marinated mushrooms that I made late this afternoon. Instead of mushrooms I am writing about strep throat. My husband came home from work tonight telling me he was having trouble swallowing and didn’t want crudités. Sure enough his throat has lovely white spots, coupled with swollen glands and a low grade fever. Tomorrow we will be going to the doctor (hopefully), and getting treatment started. I don’t expect to be around much tomorrow. But if I have any time in the kitchen I will post something.
For dinner tonight I made a quick soup in the Vitamix of: 4 carrots, 2 stalks of celery, 1 bell pepper, ½ garlic clove, 1 tablespoon yellow onion, and a little wine vinegar. I processed this just until it was completely smooth and approximately room temperature so that the vitamin C did not deteriorate. I topped the soup with diced cherry tomatoes, crispy balsamic leeks and freshly ground black pepper. We followed this up with our usual fresh green juice (6 cups spinach, 5 carrots, 3 stalks celery, 1 apple, 1/2 lemon and 1 inch ginger) and our powdered green drink. I also made Dan a chocolate banana smoothie (1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup oat flour, 2 T cocoa powder, 1 T ground flaxseed, 1 pitted date, cinnamon, water and ice) for the calories. Not a terribly inspiring dinner. However, we got a lot of nutrition without making a sore throat feel worse.
So much for the peace and calm of a day ago. As I said a few posts ago, there is always something going on here that keeps me on my toes. I will be back with another post as soon as I can. I hope you are having a more peaceful day at your house than I am. Good night and talk to you soon.
Ah Ali,
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that...hopefully with your wonderful care and food he'll have a speedy recovery.
Rose,
ReplyDeleteI hope you are right. That is my plan. ;-)
talk to you later,
Alicia
looks yummy and oh so healthy! hope he feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about Dan, but happy to hear that you take such good care of him!
ReplyDeleteNo hurry in answering this questions, but when things calm down I wanted your opinion. I'm gearing up for that Vitamix purchase, the newest model the 5200. So they it comes with a wet blade container and then you pay $100 more for the dry blade container. Do you have separate containers and is this really necessary? I do want to be able to grind my own flours :/
Thanks for your advice!
Oh, that's an awful shame! But I'm sure few germs in the world are a match for your healthy culinary creations and that this strep bug goes down for the count in no time! Sending lots of healing thoughts and big hugs to you both - drink some soothing green smoothies and feel better soon, Dan! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAimee,
ReplyDeleteThanks it was tasty, but a little more bland than I normally prefe. But it was perfect for his tender throat. I hope he feels better soon too!
Alicia
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThanks, I am trying to be a good nurse. ;-)
I do have both the wet and dry containers for my Vitamix. The dry container doesn't get used often, although I do use it a few times a year. You could buy the dry container later once you are ready to grind flour. I have accidentially ground flour in my wet container and it did work. When you look at the two containers together the blade shape is different in the dry vs wet container. I think you will want the dry container eventually but maybe not need it right away. Is that what you needed to know?
Alicia
La,
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am a little freaked out about this. Hopefully I hear from the doc soon. I sent him an email last night. I will feel better once we get him on antibiotics (assuming it is strep). But he has all the symptoms and his coworker has it too so I think it is a given.
talk to you soon and thanks again,
Ali
I was knocked over a couple of weeks ago by a seriously sore throat and difficulty swallowing, so you husband has my deepest sympathy. Hopefully he feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteShannon,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your well wishes. That is very thoughtful of you.
Glad you feel better now. :-)
Alicia
So sorry to hear about the strep throat. Ick. Even if it wasn't the meal you planned, it certainly looks good!!!
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteThanks. I try to make our dinners look appealing. Some are more difficult to "fancy up" than others.
I was just contemplating what to make him for breakfast that is nutritious and will go down easy. Looks like it will be something else in the Vitamix. ;-)
I hope you are having a good morning.
talk to you soon,
Alicia
Sorry Dan isn't feeling well, hope he's better soon. That soup looks like just the thing for a sore throat. Lucky he's got you taking care of him! Hope you both have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteI hope Dan gets well soon! Take care of yourself, too.
ReplyDeleteHey, Ali - I was just freezing some ripe bananas for future banana ice cream and thought of Dan! Bet that would be a nice treat that would go down the sore throat in a manner both soothing and tasty! :-)
ReplyDeleteJanet,
ReplyDeleteThanks! His fever is a little lower this morning and he is drinking fresh green juice now. The doc has ordered an antibiotic and bloodwork. We are leaving here soon to get that taken care of.
Hope you have a good weekend too,
Alicia
Blessed Mama,
ReplyDeleteThanks, that was very sweet of you. I tend to forget about me. The reminder was well timed. ;-)
Alicia
La,
ReplyDeleteThat put a huge smile on his face! He said to tell you thanks for the suggestion. Good thing I bought bananas yesterday. ;-)
hugs,
Ali
Yay for big smiles and well-timed banana purchases!
ReplyDelete:-D
La,
ReplyDeleteDan just told me that he, "likes the way you think." And that I "should hang out with you more often." Can you tell how much he likes the banana ice cream? I swear he is addicted. I can't make it often or he would OD on it.
We are heading out to the doc and pharmacy. I will check in later.
thanks again,
Ali
Thoughts are with you and Dan and hope the antibiotics kick in soon. It's yucky to be sick anytime, but especially on a weekend. Boo! Keep us posted. :)
ReplyDeleteLolly
That's helpful, thanks!!
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Dan's on a roll today! First his comment about how I'd administer his antibiotics, now this. He might not think I'm such a great influence once you start giving him Mr. Pugsly's Peanut Butter dog biscuits as snacks! LOL!
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow banana ice cream addict, Dan has my complete empathy and support (and if I were there I'd be sneaking him extra banana ice cream while you were out buying Mr. Pugsly's). ;-)~
get better soon Dan! sorry you are feeling so badly, strep throat hurts
ReplyDeleteSorry for the less than timely reply. We are on our way home now. But we needed to stop at the health store. Can't wait to share my new find. I will reply to each of you properly once I get home. :-)
ReplyDeleteAlicia
I hope your husband is doing okay! Was it strep? If so, I hope he got the medication he needs and is on the way to feeling better. If not, I hope he has started to feel better and is relaxing and resting either way :-) I am sure you are a great nurse with all of your healthy food cooked with love!
ReplyDeleteCourtney
Lolly,
ReplyDeleteThanks! He is going to start the antibiotics with dinner. At the moment he is resting and watching SciFi on the DVR with the cats.
Thanks for your well wishes! We really appreciate it. :-)
Alicia
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome. If you have any other questions about it don't hesitate to ask. I know you will love yours as much as I love mine. :-)
Alicia
La,
ReplyDeleteHe is still giggling about the antibiotics given like he was a pup. I know he would appreciate the extra banana ice cream.
thanks again for making us laugh today, :-)
Alicia
Michelle,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the well wishes. We both appreciate it very much! I will keep you posted.
Alicia
Courtney,
ReplyDeleteWe won't know for sure until the culture comes back but the GP said it looked bad and he has a 7 day course of high level antibiotics. We are hoping that will do the trick.
While we were at the healthfood store we also picked up some Thayers Slippery Elm Lozenges. I have heard good things about them. Hopefully they will help too.
thanks for your well wishes,
Alicia
