Iodine Tainted Soymilk Found In Australia and Ireland

Bonsoy brand soymilk has been recalled after 10 people in Australia got sick from consuming it.

Normal healthy levels of iodine consumption are 80 – 150 mcg. The upper limit for iodine consumption is 1,100mcg for an adult (much less for children). Some iodine is necessary for proper thyroid function. This particular brand of soymilk is enriched with kombu (which naturally contains iodine). One quarter of a cup of kombu is supposed to contain 415mcg of iodine. However, 1/4 cup of kombu is far more than the average serving.

I will continue to make my own soymilk. But I would suggest staying away from brands of soymilk that are enriched with kombu until there is some indication of why the iodine level is Bonsoy milk was so high.
