Genetically Modified Soy to include Omega 3 Fatty Acids
According to this article, the FDA has approved a genetically modified (GM) soybean with omega 3 as generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Since this was the first I heard of this I wanted to share it with everyone else.
If you are avoiding GM foods, as I am, you should know this product would be in your grocery stores in the future. Had I not read the article I may have purchased some of these products because they contain omega 3 fatty acids, which is something I try to include in our diet.
Why can't we just leave the food supply alone in this country? Argggggh.

ReplyDeleteGood guess but no. The edamame were my afternoon snack with my green tea since having soy and green tea together is reported to enhance the bioavailability of each.
The dehydrator project is a raw cheese. It is in the frig chilling now. I should have the results posted in a few hours. Since I knew it would taste very different cold I haven't tried it yet so I can't tell you whether I like it or not. It looks like soft cheese so it may have worked.

ReplyDeletei don't understand why it is necessary to add things to any of our food. i know that getting complete nutrition is important, but you just need to eat more of the foods that include those nutrients instead of foods that add them artificially. it's ridiculous.
ReplyDeletei also heard that like 90% of soy products include "roundup-ready" soybeans produced by monsanto. ew.

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for letting me know that you are interesting in my experiments. I get bored doing the same thing all the time which is part of the reason I "play around" in the kitchen. My husband affectionately refers to our kitchen as Area 51 due to all my "testing".
If either of you have any ideas or things you want me to test let me know. Doing things like this keeps me creative. As weird as this sounds I even like the failures. I think they are a great learning experience.

ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to leave the food alone. However, I think part of the reason it happens is that most Americans would rather "take the easy road" than eat a variety of foods. If they can get soy and omega 3 in one product that means they don't have to consume flax, chia or hemp seeds with their soy I bet they will buy it. The market drives the production. It all makes me a little sad to have an MBA (but that was a long time ago and I am a very different person now).
Nice to have you back, by the way. I hope work is a little less busy now.

Since so much soy is GMO, and since organic food by definition prohibits soy, I only buy organic soy products! Of course, that doesn't take care of all the OTHER GMO foods out there.. . . *sigh*

ReplyDeleteExcellent point! I buy organic soy too but thought I could have been luring in by the "good source of omega 3" that you know will be on the food label. Sometimes I can be a little single minded and have bought things on impulse and found out later I shouldn't have.

Well, I will probably take a bit of a beating for this one, but I am really fine with genetically modified food. It is not all perfect, science never is. Genetic engineeing has saved the lives of billions of people. It also has been around for, at minimum, hundreds of years. Genetic engineering of food is one of the reasons the field of genetics has advanced so far. Besides, most of the produce we all eat has already been genetically modified. Ever eat a banana? Even organic ones have been genetically modified.

Genetic engineering is great in the lab but I don't want it on my plate and I am willing to pay more to avoid it.

It seems to me that omega-3 enhanced soy beans are going to be targeted for animal feed so that the meat sold is omega-3 enhanced. That way, people can stop eating the fish that they've been force feeding themselves for the omega-3 and start eating what they really want - steak!

Seems to reinforce eating organic especially soy beans. I am finding that some of my favourite soy products that used to be organic are now not :(

ReplyDeleteI agree it is another reason to always make certain the soy you buy is organic. That is not encouraging that some previously organic products are now conventional. I don't normally reread labels on products I routinely buy. Looks like I need to start. Thanks for the tip.
