Mid Morning Snack - Green Tea and Soy
We try to drink a little green tea every three hours to keep our levels of EGCG up thorough out the day. EGCG is an antioxidant that is reported to be very efficient at neutralizing free radicals before they cause harm. Free radicals modify your DNA, which is not something you want to happen. DNA abnormalities can result in cancer. Needless to say, I like to keep our EGCG levels as high as possible.
According to a report I read last week EGCG levels reach their highest levels after 5 to 8 hours of consuming tea. I randomly decided that we should try to drink green tea every three hours (while awake) to keep our levels at the maximum for as much time as possible during the day.
Since we have our first green tea at 7 am, then at 10 am we have a “green tea chaser”. I add a few goji berries to the tea for additional antioxidants and always try to include a little soy. Today’s soy was a tablespoon of dry roasted edamame. I add soy to the green tea break to increase the effectiveness of both the green tea and soy. In Anticancer the author indicated that the combination of green tea and soy showed increased activity of the active compounds in the tea and soy, compared to consuming them alone.
Another benefit of having the green tea and soy snack every three hours is that you aren’t as hungry at meal times.
